I’m at a loss as I’m no mechanic and I’m not sure what to do at this point. Why is power steering foaming in reservor. I called a highly recommended mechanic from the dubbers forum and he said he doesn’t even know how to help me at this point other than trying to go through the process again and changing the cap on the reservoir as he said it might not be venting anymore. There’s no obvious fluid leaks anywhere, the level is always in the same place everyday. The reservoir needs to be drained from time to time and then filled with new fluid. disconnect the return line from the steering box and insert a hose into the steering box and duct it to a drain pan. Improper Drainage Usually, it happens due to improper drainage. I live in a condo downtown so my workspace is fairly limited and I’ve been taking it to the power plant where I work in the off hours and putting it up on jack stands and trying to work the air out of the system by doing the whole lock to lock thing over and over again and waiting for the bubbles to settle out but the problem just keeps coming back every morning. Drain the reservoir and fill with clean fluid. I can shut the engine down, wait for the bubbles to settle out start it up again and go lock to lock and after usually 5 minutes of repeating this process it’s good for the day. Within a couple of days there was a whining sound coming from the power steering pump on cold starts. Otherwise your taking a chance of getting metal shavings back in the systems. New rack and pinion, new pump, new lines. Best thing to do is completely go through the power steering system. I have done a dozen power steering units with the same issue. I supplied them with pentosin and all seemed well. This is a notorious problem with Ford Motor products. Power steering fluid was of an unknown age so took in for a flush. I recently came into possession of a 2004 Audi A4 (3.0 Quattro) and have been taking care of the things that needed to be done or didn’t have any record of. I had in possession an old cap that I had drilled a hole in for vacuum and pressurization, so I put that on for the interim.Hi everyone, hoping someone here may have some insight. Time and availability to troubleshoot this isn’t readily available, so I thought to ask for some suggestions on causes for this. Another thought is some kind of air leak on the low pressure side allowing air in and no or minimal fluid out. My thoughts would be overheating fluid, but I believe the pressure builds rapidly even on initial start up. The fluid also conditions O-rings and reduces the wear and tear on all steering parts. The flow is from the pump to hydra-booster, return1 hose from hydra-B, then from hydra-B to steering box, then to oil cooler, then pump return 2. Bubbles are 99 caused from air entering the system, the other 1 bad pump. It is safe and running great, but high milage. You can have a suction air leak and not leak fluid. I don’t intend to put much time and effort in this vehicle. There is no foaming and power steering works as it should. This vehicle is not equipped with a power steering cooler like some are. When I opened the power steering reservoir a very good amount of air pressure burst out and spewed fluid out. If I shut off the engine and let it sit for 5-10 minutes everything is back to normal. I dont notice any change in steering effort. The last two days Ive noticed that fluid is overflowing out of the resevoir. The power steering pump has been whining and the reservoir has aerated oil in it. My rack and pinion has had a slow leak so I decided to add some Lucas power steering stop leak. Did the brakes on my daughter’s van a little while ago and when I got done I was doing a fluid check.
